Seven (1995) – 30th Anniversary Rerelease

In honor of the 30th Anniversary of the release of Seven (1995), we’re rereleasing the coverage! Special thanks to our community commissioners Fernando Rodriguez, Flash Gordon, Jefferson B, Katie Gutierrez, cocoa2mc, pooljedi, Martin K, shockg11, Keith Alejandro, Ryan L, and jmyjnstn67 for coming together and making this podcast on the 1995 David Fincher helmed “Seven” possible. Neither Jim nor I had seen this movie in it’s entirety, though some of us were more spoiled than others. We were surprised at how well the movie held up and managed to entertain despite the various exposure to spoilers. We discuss the film, it’s message, our own bleak/positive worldviews, and much more.

Get Shorty (1995)

Get Shorty’s portrayal of Hollywood might feel a little dated over 25 years later but it remains undeniably cool, which is what you’d expect from an adaptation of an Elmore Leonard novel. Join us for a conversation of this slick mashup of Hollywood and mafia.

Heat (1995) – 25th Anniversary Re-Release

Today is the 25th anniversary of an absolute classic crime drama, Heat. If we hadn’t already reviewed it we probably would take the opportunity to do so right now. However, thanks to the generosity of one of our most loyal listeners, Freddy C, you can hear what we thought of it circa Feb. 2018. Thanks again for the commission, Freddy, and everyone else, enjoy the re-release of Heat.

Casino (1995)

This might be the last time they let street guys like us handle any podcasts this valuable. We’ve had a good run of Scorsese films this year (Goodfellas, The Irishman, The Wolf of Wall Street) but there’s only so much gas is in the Scorsese tank. We canceled our Raging Bull 40th anniversary podcast because we just couldn’t fit it in. Jim’s pumping the breaks on reviewing any more gangster films in the near future. Are we running out of steam? Getting sloppy? I sure hope not because that’s when you make mistakes. That’s when you get whacked.

Join us for a little over an hour of discussion of Scorsese’s 1995 classic Las Vegas gangster film, Casino.

Hackers (1995)

Max commissioned one of his beloved films from high school (shout out to the Class of ’95!), Hackers.  Directed by Iain Softley and starring Jonny Lee Miller and Angelina Jolie, Hackers is a mostly ridiculous look into mid-90s hacker culture that’s core plot is a rehash of Office Space, which is to say it’s a rehash of Superman III.  We discuss the film as contemporary computer nerds and as grown men looking back at the naivety of early hacker culture and the weird prescience the move shows.

Heat (1995)

Special thanks to Freddy C, friend of the pod and one of the heroes from our recent Groundhog Day charity drive, who commissioned the epic 1995 crime thriller, Heat. Directed by Michael Mann and starring Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, Val Kilmer, among many, many other notable stars, it features some of the best looking and sounding action ever committed to film, not to mention an inspired mano a mano acting showdown between some of the greatest actors of their generation.
