The Holdovers (2023)

The Holdovers is a delightful movie with emotional depths that isn’t seen often in recent cinema. Alexander Payne has crafted a heartfelt movie about a group of boys left at boarding school over Christmas break. Paul Giamatti stars as the curmudgeon tasked with watching them. The film explores the depths of joy, despair, and hilarity. It’s been called an “instant Christmas classic”, and Jim and A.Ron agree.

Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)

ngster tales. Set in 1920s Oklahoma, Killers of the Flower Moon depicts the injustices suffered by the indigenous poeples of America through the lens of one family’s maniacal and murderous attempts to steal their rights to oil found on their land.

It’s incredibly well acted and is at times gorgeous to look at, even though its action might unsettle you at times. So… it’s a Scorsese movie. You probably already know if you’ll like this one, but if not, there are a lot worse ways to spend an evening.

The Creator (2023)

If you’re a fan of robots, AI, Asimov-ian scifi, this might be the movie for you. Following on the all-too-relevant theme of AI, The Creator tells the story of a future where a large part of the world has embraced augmented humans, and the other hates it. And it was a struggle to get into the theater, so thank Jim and A.Ron for braving the difficulties.

Asteroid City (2023)

It’s a movie that is so Wes Anderson, you’ll be bathing in pastel colors and meta dialogue for the full 1 hour and 44 minute run. This movie will ask, but never answer, a handful of questions. Is this movie profound? Is the audience meant to understand it? What is that on Jason Schwartzman’s forehead?

Once again commissioner Fernando Rodriguez (you may better know him as FernNYC17 on our forums) steps up with a choice selection, this time the oft maligned Return of the Jedi.  Often dismissed as derivative or childish when compared to A New Hope or The Empire Strikes Back respectively, we have nothing but love for the climax of the story of Skywalker.  It’s got the best space battle, the best lightsabre battle, and the best puppets in all of Star Wars.  The Special Edition changes?  Not so much love.
