Doctor Strange (2016)

Who can stop Marvel Studios’ continued run of Box Office Domination? Apparently not even the forces of the negaverse or whatever the hell Doctor Strange was fighting in this movie, because A.Ron and Jim (yes, even Jim!) ate it up and saw it in two packed houses this evening. Full to bursting with imaginative ideas and visuals that must be seen to be believed, and even then just barely, Doctor Strange is just relentlessly cool and fun. Benedict Cumberbatch leads a team of A-list Hollywood talent using all of their considerable powers to make you believe this world that is full of crazy baloney ideas and imagery is rock solid and every bit as realized as the real world. If you have even a passing interest in comic book movies or just want to see what the new state of the art in terms of effects work is, go see it on the biggest screen you can find.

What Dreams May Come (1998)

Fernando Rodriguez is back for another commission! This time he selected 1998’s What Dreams May Come, starring Robin Williams, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Annabella Sciorra. Directed by Vincent Ward, and based on a story by Richard Matheson, the movie features an incredible vision of what the afterlife may be like, as it follows a family struck again and again by sudden tragedy. Oh, and we debate spirituality and our thoughts on death. One of us cried during our watch. You’ll never guess which!

105 – Contrapasso

Looks like multiple timelines is back on the menu!  Just when we had completely written of the various timeline theories, they come roaring back in episode 105, “Contrapasso”.  Not saying that any theory at this point is on entirely solid ground, but let’s just say we’ve got our laser-based satellite receivers aimed squarely at Orion’s belt. The point is a lot went down this episode.  El Lazo turns out to be Lawerence,  Dolores comes out slingin’, Elsie’s pounding Bernard’s desk with bloody robot parts, and Dr. Ford has a personal showdown with the mysterious Man in Black. Lots of stuff to be read into this week, and we spend a good amount of time doing just that.  Plus, tons of feedback on evolution, ethics, and genitalia!

702 – The Well

Jim and A.Rron dig Ezekiel and his wookie co-pilot, Shiva, mostly because it turns out, he’s not crazy. Or at least not that crazy, and mostly in the fun way. Not only did episode 702, “The Well”, effectively introduce “The Kingdom”, but offers topics such as cobbler gobblers, Ben failing at life, our disdain for the anti-christ, and we cover lots of feedback.

607 – Chapter 7

Cecily and A.Ron think that AHS season six is really bringing the scares, even if the plot and characters are still as dubious as Polk Farm Sausage. Swinging for the fences, Murphy and Co. bring a lot of death, dismemberment, and dead Mott to the proceedings, but that’s not all. Thrill to Cuba embracing the darkside, chill to Matt falling to the charms of a shrieking bear monster woman, and giggle as characters film their own demise for really no damn good reason at all! Is this the Halloween episode, or is it next week? Who knows, but we’ll see you in seven!

104 – Dissonance Theory

Another intriguing and informative episode of HBO’s Westworld is in the books, and we continue to have a lot to discuss. In “Dissonance Theory”, we learn that Ford has god-like control of the park, that the robots are largely made of “meat”, that Maeve is coming dangerously close to unraveling the illusion of her life, and that Bernard is intentionally steering Dolores towards the mysterious end-game of Westworld, the maze.

701 – The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be

The Walking Dead comes back with season 7’s premiere, “The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be”. Did they do enough to win back fans from last season’s disastrous cliffhanger? They guys are somewhat divided on their opinions on that score, as are our fans. Jeffery Dean Morgan and Andrew Lincoln are amazing, but can ?TWD? curb it’s worst instincts and put their collective pedals to the metal, and keep the momentum they’ve managed to build? We’ll find out together!

606 – Chapter 6

A.Ron and Cecily got plenty of chills and thrills in what can only be called the best episode of the season for FX’s American Horror Story. And sure, that might be considered damning the show with faint praise, but that Pigman and Nurse killing action was LEGIT frightening. The pivot from pointless homage to genuine horror had us hungry for more. What’s going on with Agnus? Who will be this season’s lone survivor? Will Sarah Paulson out scream Evan Peters? Stay tuned to find out!

103 – The Stray

Jim and A.Ron try to round up Westworld’s latest episode, “The Stray”, but corralling the big ideas this show brings to the table is proving to be quite a challenge. We appreciate the focus on the “human” element of Westworld, getting much more backstory for Bernard and Dr. Ford. But how straight a shooter is Dr. Ford? How much of his tale is fact, and how much of it carefully curated legend, intended to deceive both Bernard and the audience? Wheels within wheels!
