1001 – My Struggle

X-Files is back, with episode 1001, “My Struggle”. It was the best of X-Files (cool space ships! Mulder and Scully! Cancer Man!), it was the worst of X-Files (retcons galore, crazy conspiracy word salad monologues, our heroes flip flopping on their skepticism / gullibility). The key was, we were kind of braced for that, so by and large we enjoyed the introduction to the relaunch / reboot for what it was, and are eager to see what they get up to now that the heavy lifting is out of the way. What did you think? We got a wide range of opinions via email and the forums, but we’d love to hear from you using the contact methods below. We’ll be back for the second episode tomorrow, see you then!

512 – Be Our Guest

Cecily and A.Ron say goodbye to the “Hotel” era of “American Horror Story” as we cover the finale episode number 512, “Be Our Guest”. Lots of questions get answered, lots more get swept by the wayside, but overall we were surprised and impressed with the amount of emotion and heart Murphy and Company brought to the proceedings.

The Fifth Element (1997)

Special thanks once again to Aaron Spaulding, who for his double commission feature selected the wonderful, weird, and fully preposterous Luc Besson joint “The Fifth Element”, of which Jim and I are very familiar with. We delve into the depths of Jim’s annoyance with Ruby, while A.Ron explains how he quit worrying and learned to love the Rodd, Besson’s partly crazy, partly insightful look into life in the 24th century, and spend quite a bit of time analyzing the lead actors Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, and Gary Oldman.

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

This commissioned podcast is brought to you by the generosity of one Aaron Spaulding, thank you! Aaron wanted us to check out the 1991 mystery/thriller, “The Silence of the Lambs”, directed by Jonathan Demme and starring Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster. It’s no surprise that we’re mesmerized by Hopkin’s performance of the chilling yet suave and charming Dr. Hannibal Lecter, and found the film offered some smart commentary on a female breaking into a male dominated space as well. What might be to some surprise is Jim and A.Ron’s relative unfamiliarity with the material, which led to some confusion in places. Hope you enjoy the podcast, I hear it pairs well with a nice Chianti.

Making a Murderer

Jim and A.Ron have a LOT to say about Netflix’s documentary, “Making a Murderer”. Lots of spoilers ahead, but if you just want our opinion on whether the show is worth watching or not, rest assured that it absolutely is. We discuss the case, the defendants, the evidence, the criminal justice system in America, and ask what can we do individually and collectively to fix the numerous issues that are shed light on.

511 – Battle Royale

A.Ron and Cecily take in the penultimate episode of American Horror Story: Hotel, and it’s pretty good! Sure, there are some muddy character beats, and daffy concepts of glampire physiology, but that ain’t anything new. On the other hand, we got Iris building Donnovan sand castles in the sky, Liz drawwwwingggg out allllll of thing thiiiiings, Ramona chewing on the scenery and our favorite voodoo priestess, Queenie, and much more. All this, some stellar feedback, and an epic Ode to the Countess! See you next week for the finale!
